Berlin

In the mist of my illness Peter and I made a weekend trip to Berlin to see Clarissa. It was a lovely Autumn weekend with lots of leaves littering the streets. We arrived on Friday night and had the fun of figuring out buses and trams and crazy street numbering to find Clarissa's lovely flat. When we did arrive we had a cup of tea and cake and then off to bed for us.

On Saturday we got up and went to the local market and boy was I glad we didn't hang around too long otherwise I would have brought so many things! It was such a lovely market. The area that Clarissa lives in also has the highest birth rates in Europe (I think that was what she said) so there were LOTS of kiddies running around. So cute, playing in the leaves.

After the market we headed down to the old city to have a look at some of the buildings. We ended up doing a boat tour in German, which was nice to be out of the cold but I have no idea what the tour guide said! Oh well. We saw lots of very cool architecture, lots of very modern buildings which is a change from all the old stuff we usually see.

On Sunday, Peter and I went out walking about town again and then we headed back to the airport to head home. My legs were so sore after all this walking and as I found out on Monday, exercise is not so good for what I had on my legs, oops!

Anyway, here are the pics...
Clarissa at the market, taking a photo
Yummy, lots of herbs and spices
Autumn, Peter throwing leaves
Autumnal Trees
The Berlin gate, where you used to be able to cross from east to west
Some old buildings, I forget what they were
Self portrait, what were we looking at?
This was the spot where they burnt lots of books. There is a glass paving slab that looks into an empty library which is quite weird really. That is the Humboldt university in the background
Sorry can't recall the name of this but it's basically a really horrible building that they are now knocking down. Last time Peter saw it it was covered in mirrored glass.
Building with bullet holes, not something I am used to.

I think the empty library thing would make me cry. A strange thing about me is I find book burning way more personally offensive than most people seem to.

That building with bullet holes kinda leaves the two little holes in Russell church for dead, huh?

Those leaves looked beautiful!! At least you were able to enjoy your trip despite the leg pain :-/ I agree with Rachael; the burned books site would really pain me. What a waste.
