Day 2 in Florence consisted of an early start, up at 6am and in town by 7:45am to get to the Galleria degli Uffizi (or in my very bad Italian the Uzzi Gallery). We made good time and managed to get a good spot in the queue. Peter and I couldn't quite remember if the sign had said no bottles at all in the gallery or no drink bottles in the gallery. I had in my bag a full bottle of sunscreen, I was fairly reluctant to throw the lot away so when we got near the front of the queue we stashed the sunscreen under a bench and thought that if it was there when we got back that would be cool, if not at least someone else would use it!
The gallery itself was fairly cool. I wish I knew more about art, but after having read my children's bible stories I was a little more clued up on some of the religious aspects. My children's bible stories were a lot less graphic that's for sure! No doubt Anna would be most disappointed that I can't really remember the art and it was less then a week ago, sorry Anna! I do remember what the manhole covers looked like though!
When we left we went back to collect our sunscreen and low and behold there it was, a little good luck for us!
Next on the itinerary was the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michelangelo's David. I must say having seen two copies of this, one at the lookout in bronze, and one in the Loggia della Signoria where it was originally put, the original looked so lovely. He was one hunky statue! I can see why Michelangelo was such a good sculptor. Also in this gallery were four unfinished statues also by Michelangelo which really illustrated how hard it must be to create a 3D statue of a human, let alone a group of three or four.
I think that may have been it for the day, back for a siesta, a cold drink and plans for dinner...
Our dinner was sublime, I love Parma ham and melon.... Yum!
