Last night Peter and I ventured into London (The Big Smoke) to see The Marriage of Figaro. Now to be honest we are not usually big opera fans, so it is not usual that we should go to see an opera. The reason we went was to see my sister's friend Clarissa who was playing Barbarina.
This being our first big outting to London in the car we left heaps of time to find a park and grab some dinner before the show. We ended up going to a pub in Highgate in London for dinner. It looked like a lovely pub from the outside, however inside it was pretty dark and dingy. It was like we had walked into an Eastenders set, everyone was a local except us. There were the five or six drunks proping up the bar, who ended up providing us with some pre show entertainment. One guy was so very drunk that when he left he fell over backwards, twice, outside and hit his head pretty bad on the wooden pub furniture. His drunk friend then drove him home.... Apart from the locals we had a lovely bangers and mash for dinner, yum yum :-)
The opera was lovely, and long. It was in a theatre above another pub. A very cosy venue that seats about 100. You sit very close to the stage so a good view was ensured. I found it remarkably easy to follow and the cast were fantastic. It was an excellant evening and I may even see another opera at sometime.
